Getting healthier and starting a diet is among the top New Year’s resolutions that many Americans make. But eating healthier doesn’t have to feel like punishment, nor does it mean you have to deprive yourself of food that tastes amazing. When you’re traveling in your new or used RV, though, it can be a little trickier to maintain a balanced diet since “camp food” often means prepackaged and infinitely processed – high in sugar, fats, carbs, and everything else that tastes good but can also wreck your progress. Here are a few RV tips for getting healthier this year!
Small, Reasonable Goals
The diet that fails the quickest is the one that’s most demanding. Good habits take time. If you never cook meals at home, start by introducing one recipe per week into your routine. Once you get the hang of that, increase to another recipe. These don’t have to be elaborate meals – just enough to start switching your mindset from “ready-made” to “ready to make it!”
Make the Switch
Similarly, on your camping trips, you might try rethinking your meal plan. Don’t eat out every single meal. You can switch out packaged and processed foods for fresher options that are nearly just as simple to make: swap breakfast cereals for cooked oatmeal (none of that instant stuff that comes in packets!), drive-thru burgers at lunch time for hardboiled eggs and veggies with hummus, and lean meat with a protein-packed salad at dinnertime instead of cracking open a can of high-sodium soup. And replace at least one caffeinated or sweetened beverage a day with a glass of water.
Incorporate More Physical Activity
Okay, so this one doesn’t have to do with diet, but it does have to do with the other piece of the wellness lifestyle: exercise! Make a plan now to increase your physical activity while on camping trips. Commit to taking a daily hike or nature walk. It doesn’t have to be long – just 20 or 30 minutes or so, or long enough to get your heart rate up. The fresh air isn’t just good for your mood – it’s good for your immune system, too!
Making your health and wellness goals a priority in 2023 is something anyone can benefit from. But it’s important to set achievable goals so that you stay the course rather than end up in a self defeating cycle.
